Overview
The National Park Durmitor is the largest area under the UNESCO World Heritage Program in Montenegro. The national park in northern Montenegro features by a wide plateau on 1 500 meters above the sea level, carved by impressive mountain tops, deep canyons and glacial lakes, among which is the biggest and the most beautiful Black Lake 49 meters deep, with stunning scenery and a giant peak Medvjed that reflects on its surface.
The Canyon of the River Tara, named the “Tear of Europe”, 82 km long and 1,300 m deep, is the deepest canyon in Europe with impressive bridge Djurdjevica Tara 172 meter above the Tara River, 365 meters long, with five arches, built in 1940.
Centre of the Nationa Park is Zabljak, small town, located at the highest altitude of the Balkan Peninsula, around 1 450 meters. It is also centre of mountain and winter activities in Montenegro.
The Nature Park Piva is a region full of mountains, pastures, dense forests, streams, rivers, canyons among which is the Canyon of the River Piva with 56 manually made tunnels at a distance of 30 km and lakes among which is the largest the Lake Piva, 45 km long and 200 m deep, formed by the construction of a hydroelectric power plant that is 240 m high.
