Montenegro is divided into three regions: Southern (Coastal), Central (Continental) and Northern (Mountainous), so each one of these gave some special characteristics to its towns.
Towns of Southern (Coastal) region:
Herceg Novi
Herceg Novi is coastal town and seat of the municipality of the same name in south-western part of Montenegro, which covers 235 km² and has a population of 31.000 inhabitants. It is situated on the slopes of mount Orjen, the tallest of the Dinaric massifs and at the entrance to one of the most beautiful bays in the world – Bay of Kotor.
Kotor
Kotor is coastal town and seat of the municipality of the same name in south-western part of Montenegro, which covers 335 km² and has a population of 22.746 inhabitants. The town of Kotor is located at the end of Bay of Kotor, surrounded by mountains, notably Lovcen, and the sea.
Tivat
Tivat is coastal town and seat of the municipality of the same name in south-western part of Montenegro, which covers 46 km² and has a population of 16.338 inhabitants. It is situated in the central part of Bay of Kotor – one of the most beautiful bays in the world, surrounded by mountain Vrmac and the sea.
Budva
Budva is coastal town and seat of the municipality of the same name in south part of Montenegro, which covers 122 km² and has a population of 27.445 inhabitants. It is situated on the Montenegrin coast, surrounded by the hinterland with impressive mountain ranges such as Lovcen and Rumija and the sea.
Bar
Bar is coastal town and seat of the municipality of the same name in south part of Montenegro, which covers 598 km² and has a population of 45.812 inhabitants. It is situated on the Montenegrin coast, surrounded by the hinterland with impressive mountain range Rumija and the sea. such as Lovcen and Rumija and the sea.
Ulcinj
Ulcinj is coastal town and seat of the municipality of the same name in south part of Montenegro, which covers 255 km² and has a population of 20.507 inhabitants. It is situated on the Montenegrin coast, surrounded by the hinterland with impressive mountain range Rumija, River Bojana and the sea.
Towns of Central (Continental) region:
Cetinje
Cetinje is town and seat of the municipality of the same name in central part of Montenegro, which covers 910 km² and has a population of 12.504 inhabitants. It is the old royal capital, situated at the foot of the Lovcen mountain surrounded by two national parks: Lovcen and Lake Skadar.
Podgorica
Podgorica is city and seat of the municipality of the same name in central part of Montenegro, which covers 1.500 km² and has a population of 172.139 inhabitants. It is the capital and largest city of Montenegro, situated in the Zeta valley at the confluence of five rivers and near the remains of the ancient city of Duklja.
Niksic
Niksic is city and seat of the municipality of the same name in central part of Montenegro, which covers 2.065 km² and has a population of 65.705 inhabitants. It is the second largest city in Montenegro, situated in Niksic field surrounded by mountains and artificial lakes Krupac, Slano and Vrtac.
Towns of Northern (Mountainous) region:
Pluzine
Pluzine is town and seat of the municipality of the same name in northern part of Montenegro, which covers 854 km² and has a population of 4.272 inhabitants. It is situated on the shore of artificial lake – Piva Lake, surrounded by mountains Durmitor, Volujak and Maglic.
Savnik
Savnik is town and seat of the municipality of the same name in the northern part of Montenegro, which covers 555 km² and has a population of 2.077 inhabitants. It is situated at the confluence of the three rivers Bukovica, Bijela and Savnik, surrounded by mountains Durmitor, Vojnik and Sinjajevina.
Kolasin
Kolasin is town and seat of the municipality of the same name in northern part of Montenegro, which covers 894 km² and has a population of 12.000 inhabitants. It is situated between Rivers Tara and Moraca, surrounded by mountains Sinjavina, Bjelasica, Komovi i Vucje.
Plav
Plav is town and seat of the municipality of the same name in northern part of Montenegro, which covers 329 km² and has a population of 9.050 inhabitants. It is situated around Lake Plav and near the springs of the Rive Lim, at the base of the Prokletije mountain range.
Zabljak
Zabljak is town and seat of the municipality of the same name in the northwestern part of Montenegro, which covers 445 km² and has a population of 4.204 inhabitants.It is situated in the centre of mountain massif of Durmitor at 1,456 meters above sea level, in the middle of Durmitor National Park.
Bijelo Polje
Bijelo Polje is town and seat of the municipality of the same name in northern part of Montenegro, which covers 924 km² and has a population of 38.662 inhabitants. Bijelo Polje town is situated on the banks of the Lim River, surrounded by mountains Bjelasica and Lis, at 575 meters above sea level.
