Cetinje

Cetinje is town and seat of the municipality of the same name in central part of Montenegro, which covers 910 km² and has a population of 12.504 inhabitants. It is the old royal capital, situated at the foot of the Lovcen mountain surrounded by two national parks: Lovcen and Lake Skadar. 

Cetinje is founded in the 15th century, it became the centre of the Montenegrin state and spirituality and seat of the Montenegrin monarchy for centuries. Nowdays,  it is the historical and cultural capital of Montenegro and the city-museum with a rich architectural and cultural heritage. 

There are two international airports in Montenegro:
– the Golubovci Airport in Podgorica, in the heart of the country, 39 km from Cetinje,
– the Tivat Airport in Tivat, the Bay of Kotor, 52 km from Cetinje,
– also, Cilipi Airport in Dubrovnik, Croatia, 102 km from Cetinje.

Main landmarks in Cetinje:

  • Njegoseva Street: the main pedestrian area in the heart of the city;
  • Cetinje Monastery: the spiritual center of Montenegro, where relics such as the hand of John the Baptist are kept;
  • Billiard: Residence of Peter II Petrović Njegoš, today a museum dedicated to this poet and ruler;
  • Castle of King Nikola (State Museum): The former residence of the Montenegrin royal family, turned into a museum;
  • Blue Castle: the official residence of the President of Montenegro;
  • Church on Cipur: the court church at the place where King Nikola and Queen Milena were buried;
  • Wallachian Church: famous for its fence made from captured Turkish rifles from the 19th century;
  • Former embassies: architecturally significant buildings, including the Russian, British and French embassies, which bear witness to the city’s diplomatic past;
  • Zetski dom: the oldest theater in Montenegro. Cetinja, located in the city center.

Main annual cultural and entertainment events in Cetinje:

 

  • FunFest Cetinje: A major comedy and entertainment festival at the Summer Stage, held in June;
  • Cetinje Cultural Summer: A program featuring open-air concerts, folklore nights, and the Made in New York Jazz Festival in June, held in during all summer (from June to September);
  • Montenegro Beer Fest: A massive three-day music festival at the City Polygon featuring top regional rock and pop acts, held in July;
  • International Folklore Festival: Organized by CIOFF, this event features a colourful parade down Njegoseva Street and traditional dance performances from global ensembles, held in late July;
  • International Prosciutto Fair – MESAP: The go-to event for tasting premium dried meats from across the Balkans at Student Square, held in September;
  • MIT Festival: The Montenegro International Theatre festival at Zetski Dom, held in the October/November.
