Bijelo Polje

Bijelo Polje is town and seat of the municipality of the same name in northern part of Montenegro, which covers 924 km² and has a population of 38.662 inhabitants. Bijelo Polje town is situated on the banks of the Lim River, surrounded by mountains Bjelasica and Lisa.

Bijelo polje town is located at 575 meters above sea level and offers a great vacation, both in winter (skiing on Bjelasica in two ski centre, Kolasin 1450 and Kolasin 1600) and summer (hiking, rafting, exploring caves). 

Bijelo Polje is popular among the speleologists. The cave of Djalovica, the cave of Novakovic and the cave Osoja impress the visitors strongly.

There are two international airports in Montenegro:
– the Golubovci Airport in Podgorica, in the heart of the country, 118 km from Bijelo Polje,
– the Tivat Airport in Tivat, the Bay of Kotor, 194 km from Bijelo Polje,
– also, Tirana Airport in Tirana, Albania, 247 km from Bijelo Polje.

Main landmarks in Bijelo Polje:

 

  • Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul: a significant medieval Ortodox church from the 12th century, located in  centre of the town;
  • The City’s (Yusuf) mosque: a historical mosque with no information about when it was built, but it was transferred from the village of Jabucno to the town in 1741;

  • Park of Poets: a central park dedicated to famous local poets, providing a green space in the heart of the town.
  • The Djalovica Gorge: the gorge, natural monument recognizable by its untouched wild nature, the River Bistrica that flows through it and the Djalovica cave system with unique rock formations;
  • Novakovica Cave: known for its fascinating underground halls and wealth of cave jewelry.

Main annual cultural and entertainment events in Bijelo Polje:

 

  • On the roads of King Nikola: an international cycling race that passes through Bijelo Polje, a significant sports and cultural event, held in late April;
  • Festival of Dramatic Amateurs of Montenegro: a major annual theatre festival that brings together amateur acting troupes from across the country to perform in the town, held in June/August;
  • Days of Music: events focusing on classical music performance, held in June/August;
  • Bijelo Polje Cultural Summer: series of various concerts, art exhibitions and cultural performances, held throughout the summer months;
  • Ratkovic’s Poetry Evenings: a prestigious international poetry festival in honor of the poet Risto Ratkovic, held in September;
  • Tamburitza Fest: a major international festival of tamburitza orchestras, celebrating traditional music, held in Autumn.
